New Year Whimsy

I decided to start this year off with something a smaller and whimsical instead of my usual large project.

This is Steampunk Sea Serpent by SamSarah Design Studios. Right now it looks like this:

Steampunk Sea Serpent
32 ct laurel linen

It's charted for Weeks Dye Works and I have to admit that I'm not impressed by the provided DMC conversion. The blue suggested doesn't look anything like the one on the cover. I don't think it matters too much because it's a whimsical fantasy fish, but it would be nice if the DMC conversion bore some resemblance to the overdyed one.

I'm stitching this on the last remaining piece of laurel linen I have. I'd forgotten how much I dislike this particular fabric. It's stiff, scratchy and a pain to work with. Sticking it in the Qsnap makes a bit easier to handle but I can't ever see myself willingly buying it again.

I too sometimes find DMC conversions lack the colour depth. Also I've never heard of Laurel Linen - is that a brand or a colour?

It looks great! Are you sure the conversion doesn't look different because of how it photographs? I've never worked with weeks dye works thread so I don't know but I'm sure it'll turn out great!

Since it is a fantasy type fish, whatever colors you chose would really work. I like what I see so far....

Your new start is definitely different! I think other commenters are right though - it's such a wacky design it really doesn't matter which colours you use. However, I do feel for you if you wished the conversions to be more alike. :)

I love this design! Your colours do look very different but I don't think it will matter.

Thank you for your lovely comments on my blog, I am hoping to stitch and sew again this year. Your 2015 finishes are beautiful, such lovely stitching.. hope you get on well with your new start in spite of the stiff fabric.

Steampunk fish is adorable. I love ANYTHING Steampunk!

I noticed too that DMC conversions are really nothing close to the overdyes. But sometimes it's what you have or have to do.

I'll have to remember if I ever get across this linen.

Sorry that the fabric is horrible...on the plus side it is the last piece! That design is brilliant, I haven't seen that before and can't wait to see it stitched up.

It's a shame the fabric is a pain as it look lovely :( That design is awesome though! I've not seen that one before. Sorry the DMC doesn't look like the WDW, I guess sometimes there might not be a colour that matches. I think yours looks great though!
